For the doctoral exam, there are procedures that apply to all candidates and others that are only intended for candidates whose master’s degree was carried out in another area:

all candidates
Defense of the memorial and thesis draft presented at the time of registration
Present orally the thesis project and answer the questions formulated by the examining board composed for the selection. Presentation in the candidate’s language of choice, in the case of Linguistic Studies, and in the chosen language of literature, in the case of Literary Studies.

Candidates whose master’s degree was carried out in another area

Proof of specific knowledge
The candidate must choose one of the proposed themes and develop in a dissertation form the question formulated by the committee about the chosen theme, necessarily relying on the theoretical support suggested in the bibliography. Writing in the candidate’s language of choice, in the case of the Linguistic Studies area, and in the chosen language of literature, in the case of the Literary Studies area.
It will be allowed to consult books and dictionaries and take notes during the first hour of the test. Total duration of the test: 3 hours.

Instrumental language test (German, Spanish, French, English or Italian)
Respond in Portuguese to questions formulated from a text in the chosen language, which cannot be the language of choice for the specific knowledge test.
